The Olympics are always fun and exciting. Regardless of the host city or how many medals are won, the games are a chance to root on your fellow man (or woman!) and experience that undeniable sense of national pride. The same is true for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. There have been both highs and lows.... but ultimately, the games have been a cause for celebration. Yes, Canadians certainly have a reason to boast! Here are some of the moments that truly highlighted Canada's success in Sochi 2014:
Moving Past 'Sochi Problems' In a Positive Way
Success doesn't just have to do with medals. It can also be marked by the behaviour of the athletes. As you probably know, the start of the Sochi games was marred with controversy. Thanks to concerns over security, gay rights, the budget, unfinished buildings, and the city official's decision to put down more than 2000 stray dogs, the Russian city made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Many Canadian athletes used their platform to speak out about these issues - and some have even worked to protect those stray dogs from being harmed. Unlike many other Olympic games, this particular one has been about so much more than just the competitions. It has reminded athletes and Canadian citizens alike that nothing is more important than standing up for what you believe in. We all have a reason to be grateful.
A Quick Start On The Road To Success
Something else to be proud of? Sochi was different than previous winter Olympics games for Canada. In what way? For the first time, Canada was topping the leader board for overall medals won. The games got off to a quick start with medal after medal being awarded to our athletes. They weren't just silver and bronze, though. People from all over the country were topping the podium as well! The quick success wasn't just surprising...it was downright impressive. It certainly helped to liven things up and instil that sense of national pride. While we didn't stay at the top of the leader board the entire time, it was awfully nice while it lasted!
The Women's Hockey Team Lands The Gold Medal In Overtime
Dreams of a gold medal were almost over for the Women's Hockey Team at Sochi. By the 3rd period, the United States team was leading, 2 to 0. But then something special happened - they scored! And then with just a few minutes left of the game, they scored again. As the game went into overtime, hearts all over Canada were racing. Could they actually do it? Would the medal be ours? Well, they did it. Canada won the gold meal for Women's Hockey for the fourth consecutive games. It was without question one of the most exciting (and successful) moments that Sochi had to offer Canadians.
These are just a few highlights...and just a few of the reasons to celebrate. Ultimately, Canada's success in Sochi 2014 had less to do with the games - and more to do with the fact that so many have come together to root on our country's best and brightest athletes. What could be more inspiring than that?
